BUNION (HALLUX ABDUCUTUS VALGUS) SURGERY
There are many types of Bunion Surgeries, and just one type of surgery cannot correct all different types of bunion deformities. At Valley Foot & Ankle Center (VFAC) we perform the most advanced and minimally invasive bunion surgeries. This allows most patients to walk immediately after the bunion treatment in removable surgical shoes and to return to regular shoes and normal activity as a much faster rate then the traditional surgical approach.
Surgical correction of bunions is dependent upon the severity of the deformity. Many factors are considered when surgery is performed for patients, these factors include: patient’s overall health, activity level, occupation, systemic diseases, and overall patient expectation. Age and diabetes are not usually factors that prevent patients from undergoing bunion surgery, but a patient’s diabetes must be under control before surgery is attempted.
As mentioned there are many surgical corrections for bunion deformities. Most of the time when the bunion deformity is mild to moderate, the surgery is performed in the area of the big toe joint. The bony prominence is removed and the bone is surgically fractured to realign the joint. The fracture site is then stabilized using surgical screws. This can be done by your podiatrist in Woodland Hills at any time.
Bunion surgery is an outpatient (same day) surgical procedure. This procedure is usually takes about 30-45 minutes for a experienced surgeon. The surgery can be performed under Monitor Anesthesia Care (MAC) which consists of a light sedation with local anesthetic block. Post-operatively, the foot is placed in soft dressings with a removable surgical shoe.
Most of the time, patients are allowed to walk immediately after surgery. Since it is minimally invasive, the procedure itself is painless if performed by an experienced surgeon. Most patients will experience some pain for about 1-3 days after surgery. Usually within 2 weeks, most patients are able to return to tennis shoes, and the sutures are removed. By 4 weeks patients can return to physical activity and sports.
