ARTHROSCOPY OF THE ANKLE JOINTS
Ankle Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that involves the introduction of a small circular lens into a joint for the purpose of inspection, and possible treatment of the joint. Arthroscopy offers many advantages over classical “open joint” (arthrotomy) techniques. First, arthroscopic surgery only requires small incisions in the ankle joint capsule, and minimizes scarring and trauma to the soft tissue. Second, the environment within the ankle joint is more easily and accurately inspected utilizing the magnification provided by the arthroscope. Third, the joint is continuously bathed in physiological fluids providing a healthier environment during surgery.
INDICATIONS FOR ANKLE ARTHROSCOPY
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure for the evaluation and management of pain of the ankle joints. Indications of a need for Ankle Arthroscopy are: chronic ankle sprain, ligamentous scarring, cartilage damage, a loose bone fragment, arthritis, impingement, syonivitis, tendonitis, an old ankle fracture, ankle stiffness, repair of ankle fractures, and ankle fusion. It is also used for other diagnostic purposes.
Ankle Arthroscopy is a very minimally invasive procedure, which only requires two incisions that are about 1 cm in size. The scope is introduced into the ankle through these small incisions and the joint is i nspected. An instrument is then introduced into the ankle and the loose fragments of bone, cartilage or ligament can be removed through these small portals. Sometimes drilling small holes through the bone is necessary to stimulate new cartilage growth in cases involving arthritis.
ANKLE ARTHROSCOPY: SURGERY OF THE ANKLE
Arthroscopic surgery of ankle is an outpatient (same day) surgical procedure, which usually takes an experienced surgeon approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia with local anesthetic ankle joint block. Post-operatively, the ankle is placed in a removable boot or splint, depending on what was done for the patient.
Most times following surgery, patients are allowed to walk immediately afterwards. If drilling to the bone was done, then non weight bearing for 2-3 weeks is recommended. Since this procedure is very minimally invasive, it is usually painless if performed by a experienced surgeon. After surgery, patients are usually sent to physical therapy, especially if they had prolonged periods of pain and disuse prior to surgery. Within 2-3 weeks most patients are able to return to regular shoes and by 4-6 weeks patients are back to enjoying physical activity and sports.
