Hammertoes are a contracture of the toes as a result of multiple issues. These issues include: muscle and tendon imbalance, tight calf muscle (equinus). Hammertoes can be also be a hereditary problem. Hammertoe deformities usually cause corns/callus on the top of the toe as a result the toe rubbing on shoes. Hammertoes can be flexible or rigid in nature. Flexible hammertoes usually become rigid hammertoes as time progresses, if left untreated. Flexible hammertoes are easier to treat, as this type of deformity can be corrected with a less invasive surgical approach. More invasive hammertoe surgeries are required to correct rigid hammertoes.

SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR HAMMERTOES

At Valley Foot Ankle Center Dr. Hormozi has great expertise in minimally invasive hammertoe surgery with excellent surgical success rates and a fast recovery. Flexible hammertoe procedures are done in the office. It only takes 5 minutes to perform, and within 2 days patients are able return to regular shoes. This a very minimally invasive procedure that only requires releasing the tendon. No sutures are required, and only a band aid is applied.

Rigid hammertoe surgery is an outpatient (same day) surgical procedure usually done at the surgical center. This procedure usually takes about 15-20 minutes for a experienced surgeon to perform. This surgery requires tendon transfer with some bone work. The surgery can be performed under Monitor Anesthesia Care (MAC) which is light sedation with local anesthetic block. Post-operatively, the foot is placed in soft dressings with removable surgical shoe. Since this procedure is minimally invasive and usually painless if performed by an experienced surgeon, patients are allowed to walk immediately after surgery. Most patients experience only minimal pain for about 1-3 days after surgery. Within 2 weeks most patients are able to return to tennis shoes and the sutures are removed. By 3 weeks patients are back to full physical activity and sports.
